it's complicated

I just returned from the theater with sisters and a friend, having seen "it's complicated". I think I need to start lowering my expectations, so I don't leave movies disappointed.

I was so looking forward to seeing this movie (mostly for the John Krasinski factor, but I digress) and it just didn't deliver the way I had hoped. Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin were great, as the ex-spouses who hook up. However, I wasn't into Steve Martin as the new love interest for Jane, Streep's character.

I really loved the dynamic between Streep and Baldwin and could have spent hours watching them play off one another. The relationship and romance were very believable, and I truly think every divorced child dreams of their parents rekindling the spark. I thought Krasinski's turn as the daughter's fiance, who knows too much, was excellent and he brought a lot of humor to the part and the movie.

The casting of Lake Bell as Baldwin's new wife was also a bit of a downer for me. I just didn't believe that he would leave his wife for her. The character got no airtime and you weren't able to root against her, as you never saw her, or got the vibe that she was a homewrecker.

I don't know, maybe I'm being too hard. Nancy Meyers did a wonderful job. The movie was well written (aside from the ending, I felt it was lacking a bit) and the direction was great. There really wasn't a dull moment (I laughed my ass off, ask my sisters). But like I said, I wasn't as happy leaving it as I thought I'd be.

I give it a solid B+, I enjoyed it for the most part. I don't know that it's worth the $12.50 to see in it a theater though.

But hey, that's just this girl's opinion.

TV: Best of 2009 (well, my take anyway)

So, being that the tube has pretty much hit the mid season lull, I thought that now is the perfect time to send some of the best out there to all of you. PLEASE NOTE: when I say "Best of 2009" I mean the beginning of the television season (September through present). I do not literally mean the year 2009.

New Sitcom: MODERN FAMILY. The relationships portrayed are so spot on, I am laughing while sitting here writing. My favorite characters are Jay, Gloria and Manny. The dynamic of the newly merged family is great, and I think that it is well acted. I must say also that Ty Burrell (Phil) is not to be missed as the suburban father of 3. His portrayal, although NOTHING like my own father, reminds me a lot of my childhood (other dads). Phil is so clueless that it makes you love him more. I have to say that I think this show is a true hit and I look forward to the coming antics the writer’s have in store for us.

New Drama: MERCY. It is so refreshing to see a network (NBC) put a show on the air, where the lead is a female (Taylor Schilling as Veronica) who isn’t perfect, Mercy introduced us to Veronica, the just-home-from-Iraq nurse, who is torn between her husband and lover from overseas. Taylor Schilling is doing a wonderful job bringing this complex character to life, and making me beg for more when the episodes end. It doesn’t hurt that the actors are gorgeous and the other main set (aside from the hospital) is an Irish Pub in New Jersey. This drama has it all, and I won’t tell you what’s happening (I’m rooting for Mike) but I will tell you MERCY is worth setting the dvr for. PS, you can catch past episodes on Primetime On Demand (Time Warner Channel 1009)

Returning Sitcom: 30 ROCK. Yes, as much as I am the BIGGEST fan of the Office, I must give this one to 30 Rock. Tina Fey is true comedic genius. I swear, when I grow up I want to be just like her. The writing, the acting, I swear Alec Baldwin might be my favorite person on the planet. There are no words needed. If you watch this show, you get it and you agree. If you don’t…GO RENT THE DVD’s ASAP.

Returning Drama: HOUSE. As always, Hugh Laurie delivers such an epic portrayal of the dysfunctional diagnostician, that it has us all in awe. In the captivating 2-hour season premiere, we were able to see Dr. House at his most vulnerable; in a mental institution, trying to overcome his drug dependency. I cannot fully express my adoration of Hugh Laurie. Every week, he draws me in and makes me laugh and sometimes he even makes me cry. Of course, there are some really great supporting roles on that show. Omar Epps and Olivia Wilde as Dr. Foreman and Thirteen, respectively, always pique my curiosity and have me rooting for the non-hospital based storyline. But really, I’d take on an unidentified rash any day if it meant I’d get House on my case.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Best Female Comedic Performance: Courtney Cox – I may not like your show, but you’re still fab!
Best Male Comedic Performance: Alec Baldwin - Dude, it's Alec Baldwin
Best Female Dramatic Performance: Chandra WIlson - Miranda Bailey is the main reason I watch Grey's
Best Male Dramatic Performance: Alan Rudyk - Dollhouse, V, this guy can do it all
Best Comedic Duo: Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy (30 ROCK)
Best Dramatic Duo: Dr. James Wilson and Dr. Gregory House (HOUSE)
Best Show that gets no Recognition: BONES
Best Reality Show: Hell's Kitchen
Best Soundtrack: Grey's Anatomy

BEST OF THE CW:
Although I hate to admit it out loud, I am an avid C Dub watcher (don't pretend like the Gilmore Girls wasn't the best show on television when it was airing). SO, here is my best list for those of you who have a guilty pleasure like mine...

Best Show: SUPERNATURAL - Put it on, check out the guys, and THEN get back to me
Best New Show: VAMPIRE DIARIES
Best Actress: Sophia Bush (ONE TREE HILL)
Best Actor: Ed Westwick (GOSSIP GIRL)
Best Duo: Dean and Sam Winchester
Best Soundtrack: ONE TREE HILL
Best Setting: GOSSIP GIRL - New York Cityyyyy

So that's my list. You may think I'm wrong, some may think I'm crazy

Driver, take me to Nassau County

I mean really, come on. Anyone from Long Island, (or the City, I’d wager) would EVER refer to going out East, by the county name. In the latest episode of Gossip Girl, we were subjected to that verbiage, more than once. I for one will not stand for it. Currently in its third season on the C Dubs, GG is barely hanging on to the fans it captivated in the first season.

Well writers, not staying true to NY, and its outlaying areas, is not going to help your case.

I have to be honest here, the show is not as good as it once was (I miss season one) but it was always so spot-on when it came to City references. Addresses (The Van der Woodsen lobby is actually the lobby of the building they supposedly live in), restaurants, the Met steps, you get the picture. But the Nassau County comment? That I cannot forgive.

Who has ever gotten on the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road, for those of you that are LI-ignorant) and said “one way ticket to Nassau County please”??? Would it have been so difficult for the writers of GG to actually do some research and name a specific town? I really don’t get it. Syosset, Jericho, Roslyn, Great Neck, we’re not picky, and we won’t judge. But Nassau County, it’s just unrealistic, and to be totally honest, just sounds plain STUPID.

Honestly, I only continue watching to see what ridiculousness the writers come up with each week. Serena dating a Congressman? The creepy threesome? The writers did get one thing right…Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester you are amazing), she’s the only good thing left on the show.

But hey, that’s just this girl’s opinion

Just This Girl's Opinion

For years now, both friends and family have been coming to me for my take on current television, movies and books. But it wasn’t until recently, that the idea was born to start a blog. My sister, more than once, stated that since I am so passionate about these things, I should put my opinions out there, and let people take it how they want.

So here I am, putting it out there for you all to see and do with as you want. I will rate and review what I deem exciting and/or news worthy. Of course you don’t have to listen, or even pay attention to my ramblings at all.

After all, that's just this girl's opinion
